Shantivan: A Tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's Legacy
Nagpur, Maharashtra | April 14, 2025 – Shantivan, located near Nagpur, stands as a peaceful homage to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution. The site, known for its cultural and historical significance, preserves Dr. Ambedkar’s personal belongings, providing a rare glimpse into his life and contributions.
With support from the Maharashtra State Government, Shantivan has been developed into a multifaceted center, featuring a museum dedicated to Ambedkar’s artifacts, a meditation and spiritual center, a library, a training facility, and residential accommodations. These spaces serve as both a tribute to Dr. Ambedkar and a hub for reflection and learning.

A major highlight of Shantivan is its connection to the historic 1956 mass conversion ceremony in Nagpur, where Dr. Ambedkar led thousands of followers in embracing Buddhism. The event’s arrangements were managed by Vamanrao Godbole. In 1983, Nanakchand Rattu, Dr. Ambedkar’s personal secretary, entrusted over 400 invaluable artifacts to Vamanrao Godbole for preservation, many of which are now on display at Shantivan.
Notable exhibits include a statue of Gautama Buddha, along with personal items such as coats, hats, pens, and Dr. Ambedkar’s walking stick, all of which offer an intimate look into his daily life. The most significant artifact on display is the typewriter Dr. Ambedkar used to draft the Indian Constitution, symbolizing the foundation of the nation.
Shantivan, however, is more than just a museum—it is a space that preserves the spirit of Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings and continues to inspire generations. Through its rich collection and commitment to education, it remains a testament to the values of equality, justice, and knowledge championed by Dr. Ambedkar.
