In a startling incident, a thief had a change of heart after discovering that the house he had stolen belonged to the renowned Marathi writer, Narayan Surve. The thief, however, returned a stolen LED TV along with an apologetic note.
A note left near a portrait of the poet revealed the thief’s remorse: “I didn’t know this was Narayan Surve’s house! Here’s the TV back. Sorry!”
The incident took place in Neral, Raigad district, where Surve’s daughter Sujata and her husband Ganesh Ghare currently reside with all his memoirs, books and photos. The couple had been away in Virar for 10 days, during which time the thief entered their locked house and made off with several items, including an LED TV.
Sujata Ghare had visited her son at Virar on June 26. On July 14, she got a call from neighbour saying that the window of the toilet was open and there was a possibility of theft in the house.
The panicked occupant of the house, rushed back to her three-storeyed Neral house only to find all the belongings at home in a mess. While the thief returned the TV, other items like taps, cooking supplies, and a bottle of cooking oil remained missing.
The Ghares have filed a police report, and Inspector Shivaji Dhawale of the Neral police station is investigating. Fingerprints on the TV and CCTV footage are being analyzed to track the culprit. Police believe the thief may have made multiple visits to the house.A celebrated Marathi poet and social activist passed away on August 16, 2010, at the age of 84.
