Stricter Traffic Rules: Higher Fines and Tougher Penalties
To improve road safety, India has introduced strict traffic rules with much higher fines starting March 1. Violators may also face jail time and community service.
Severe Penalties for Underage Driving
- If a minor is caught driving, the parent/guardian will be fined ₹25,000.
- The juvenile may face three years in jail.
- The vehicle’s registration will be canceled.
- The minor will not be allowed to get a driving license until they turn 25.
Jumping Signals and Overloading Vehicles
- Running a red light will now cost ₹5,000.
- Overloading a vehicle carries a hefty ₹20,000 fine, up from the previous ₹2,000.
Heavy Fine for Drunk Driving
- Previously, the fine for driving under the influence was ₹1,000–₹1,500.
- Now, first-time offenders will pay ₹10,000 and could face six months in jail.
- Repeat offenders will be fined ₹15,000 and may be jailed for up to two years.
Fines for Missing Documents
- Driving without a valid license: ₹5,000 fine.
- Driving without insurance: ₹2,000 fine. Repeat offenders will be fined ₹4,000.
- Missing a pollution certificate: ₹10,000 fine, six months in jail, and community service.
Helmet and Seat Belt Rules
- Not wearing a helmet will result in a ₹1,000 fine and possibly a three-month license suspension.
- Failing to wear a seatbelt will also cost ₹1,000.
- Using a mobile phone while driving now carries a ₹5,000 fine.
Other Traffic Violations
- Riding a two-wheeler with three people: ₹1,000 fine.
- Dangerous driving or racing: ₹5,000 fine.
- Not giving way to emergency vehicles like ambulances: ₹10,000 fine.
These strict measures aim to ensure safer roads and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
