In shocking news for the students of Acharya & Marathe College in Chembur, the administration has now imposed a ban on wearing several other Western clothing as well on the premises. Owing to this, nearly 40 male students were restricted from entering college on Tuesday morning, July 2.
This development came days after the Bombay High Court (HC) upheld its dress code banning burqas, niqabs, hijabs, and other religious identifiers such as badges, caps and stoles.
On June 27, the college issued a notice titled ‘dress code and other rules’, stating that torn jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses and jerseys are not allowed.
The college issued a directive mandating students in higher classes must be dressed in ‘formal’ and ‘decent’ attire, with specific instructions for both male and female students.
The dress code prescribed half and full shirts with trousers for boys, and ‘any Indian/Western non-revealing dress’ for girls.
Some female students dressed in jeans and t-shirts were prevented from entering the college premises alongside their peers, who were wearing hijabs, on Monday, July 1.
While many students have opposed this ban, the college has justified this move saying that the college, the administration is preparing them to be ready for the corporate world.
