Tourists in Nainital Criticized for Littering, Video Sparks Outrage
A video from Nainital showing tourists arguing with locals after being asked not to litter has gone viral on social media, sparking discussions about responsible tourism and civic responsibility.
The video, shared by Instagram user Shinjini Sengupta, shows a tense argument that began when her sister politely asked some tourists not to throw trash on the street. The group, from Lucknow, was reportedly celebrating a birthday and had left tissues and cake packaging on the roadside instead of using a trash bin.
Sengupta described the incident, saying the women initially refused to listen and claimed there was no dustbin nearby. A shopkeeper also stepped in, explaining that littering leads to police fines. However, the situation escalated when a member of the group threw a plastic bag into the valley despite being asked again to dispose of it properly.
Sengupta’s post details the incident: “Nainital, 14th December, 3 PM. These people cut a birthday cake and threw tissues and the cake’s bag on the road. My sister politely asked them to use a dustbin, but they argued, claiming there was none. The shopkeeper pointed out the issue and requested the same, yet they continued to litter.”
The video has sparked widespread reactions, with many users criticizing the tourists’ behavior:
- “Confidence even when it’s their mistake. Unbelievable.”
- “What do schools teach us? Isn’t it our responsibility to keep our surroundings clean?”
Sengupta concluded her post by stating, “The dustbin was just 5 feet away, yet they argued. Let’s aim to be better citizens and ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
This incident serves as a reminder for travelers to respect the places they visit and maintain cleanliness to preserve popular tourist destinations.
