The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission to review and update the salaries of central government workers and pensions for retirees. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the chairman and two members of the commission will be appointed soon.

Pay commissions are created every ten years to adjust the salaries and pensions of government employees. The 7th Pay Commission, which started in 2016, will finish its term in 2026.

The 7th Pay Commission increased the minimum salary from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000 per month and the minimum pension from ₹3,500 to ₹9,000. The highest salary and pension also went up, reaching ₹2,50,000 and ₹1,25,000, respectively.

The 8th Pay Commission will likely continue to improve the pay and pensions of government employees and retirees.
