The construction work of Vasai Jetty, which was becoming a hindrance in starting Ro-Ro service between Killabunder and Bhayandar located in Vasai (West), has been completed. Maharashtra Maritime Board is now preparing to start Ro-Ro services from Vasai to Bhayandar. They have decided to start the service from February 23. Union Port Development Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate this important project.

The Ro-Ro service will reduce the travel time between Vasai and Bhayandar from one hour to fifteen minutes. This service will reduce the distance between the two cities by 34.7 km. Ro-Ro boats will be available from 6 am to 7 pm daily.

Commuters and Mumbaikars travelling from Vasai-Virar towards Mumbai and Mira-Bhayander always had to face huge traffic congestion while travelling on this route. As a solution to this problem, the Central Government decided to start the Ro-Ro service from Bhayander West to Vasai Killabunder under the ‘Sagarmala Scheme’ in 2016. A fund of more than INR 6 crore was also sanctioned for this.

Although the construction of Bhayandar Jetty was completed on time, the construction of Vasai Jetty was stalled for many years because no objection certificate from the Archaeological Department was not available and for some other reasons too. After a long wait, finally Vasai Jetty is ready.

The contract has also been given to a private company named Suvarnadurga Shipping & Marine Services to run Ro-Ro services. Since the necessary trials have been completed, the Maritime Board is now in the process of opening the service to the public.
