Viral Cake Video Sparks Outrage Amid Pahalgam Terror Attack Fallout
New Delhi, April 25 — A video showing a man carrying a cake box into the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has ignited a firestorm of public anger and speculation, coming just days after a devastating terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam claimed 26 lives — including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen.
The footage, which rapidly circulated across social media platforms on Thursday, depicts the man entering the High Commission while evading questions from journalists. His presence — and the timing of the apparent cake delivery — has led many online to accuse the Pakistani mission of inappropriate or celebratory conduct during a period of national mourning.
“A big cake, silence to media, and timing that chills the soul — if this wasn’t a celebration, why the secrecy?” questioned one user on X (formerly Twitter). Others, however, called for restraint and cautioned against premature assumptions. “This is stupid actually. It could be someone’s birthday or something. Let’s not be fools. High Commission is not the enemy,” wrote another.
Fallout from Pahalgam Tragedy
The outrage follows a deadly attack in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam, where heavily armed terrorists — dressed to mimic Indian security forces — opened fire on tourists, creating scenes of panic and bloodshed. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the ambush.
In response, the Indian government has taken a series of strong diplomatic measures. On Thursday, the Cabinet Committee on Security declared Pakistan’s defence, naval, and air attachés in Delhi as persona non grata, instructing them to leave India within seven days. Additionally, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty and shut down the Attari Integrated Check Post, allowing only travellers with pre-May 1 endorsements to cross.
The Government of Pakistan’s official X account has also been geo-restricted in India, further reflecting the escalating tensions between the two countries.
Protests Erupt Outside High Commission
The viral cake video added fuel to an already volatile situation. Protesters gathered outside the Pakistan High Commission, chanting slogans like “Pakistan Murdabad” and demanding accountability. For many, the cake — regardless of its actual purpose — was seen as a deeply insensitive gesture under the circumstances.
In Islamabad, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif convened an emergency session of the National Security Committee in response to what officials termed as India’s “irresponsible and provocative actions.”
As diplomatic hostilities grow and tensions reach a boiling point, incidents like the cake box episode — whether misunderstood or otherwise — continue to stoke public sentiment and strain already fragile relations.
