Viral Video of Empty Streets in Goa Sparks Debate on New Year Tourism Trends
A surprising video showing Goa’s usually lively streets eerily empty during the New Year season has gone viral, sparking debates about tourism trends. Known for its vibrant nightlife and celebrations, Goa typically draws crowds of tourists this time of year. However, the quiet atmosphere this year has left many puzzled, raising questions about changing travel patterns and recent challenges affecting tourism.
Journalist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj shared the video on X, saying, “Goa is nearly empty. There are hardly any tourists. This should be a wake-up call for the government, especially regarding transportation.”
Her statement was quickly challenged by X user Shajan Samuel, who said, “This is false information. Goa is completely full.”
In response, Bhardwaj posted another video from December 29 showing an almost deserted market, claiming it was proof of her observations. “For those calling me a liar, this was taken last night on roads that are usually packed during New Year,” she wrote.
One user retweeted the video, expressing disbelief at the lack of crowds. They suggested that people might prefer traveling to Southeast Asia for better value and that this shift highlights issues in Indian tourism.
Others agreed, attributing the decline in tourists to high costs, including expensive flights, hotel rates, and taxi fares. Some users expressed hope that this would lead to improvements in India’s tourism industry.
Despite these claims, a November report from Noesis, a hotel advisory firm, painted a brighter picture for Goa’s tourism. It predicted 2024 would be a strong year, with over 8.5 million domestic tourists and international arrivals nearing pre-pandemic numbers.
Goa’s Tourism Minister, Rohan A. Khaunte, has previously dismissed claims of declining tourism as “false” and assured that the government is working to improve the tourist experience, including addressing issues with taxi services and public transport.
The debate highlights contrasting views about Goa’s current state as a tourist hotspot, with some calling for urgent action while others remain optimistic about its future.
