Virat Kohli has made history by becoming the fastest player to score 14,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He reached this incredible milestone during India’s Champions Trophy match against Pakistan. Needing only 15 runs to achieve this feat, Kohli reached the mark with a boundary off Haris Rauf, once again proving why he is considered one of the greatest players in ODI cricket.

Kohli reached 14,000 runs in just 287 innings, breaking the previous record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who took 350 innings to reach the same milestone. The only other cricketer to achieve this feat is Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, who took 378 innings.

While Tendulkar remains the all-time highest run-scorer in ODIs with 18,426 runs, Kohli is now closing in on Sangakkara’s total of 14,234 runs. With one more group-stage match left in the Champions Trophy against New Zealand, and possibly two more games if India reaches the semi-finals and final, Kohli has a strong chance of overtaking Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history.

During the match, Kohli also reached another milestone by scoring his 51st ODI century. His final boundary not only brought up his hundred but also secured India’s victory. He completed his century in just 111 balls and, with this innings, matched Tendulkar’s record for the most scores of 50 or more in ICC tournaments, totaling 23.

Since making his ODI debut in 2008, Kohli has played 299 matches in the format. He had already broken Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries during the 2023 World Cup when he scored his 50th hundred in the semi-final against New Zealand.

Kohli has faced some struggles in recent months, particularly in Test cricket, and had a slow start in this tournament, getting out early in India’s opening match against Bangladesh. However, he showed glimpses of form by scoring a half-century against England in a bilateral series before this tournament. Now, with this century against Pakistan, India will be hoping that Kohli continues this momentum in the remaining matches.

Fastest Players to Reach 14,000 ODI Runs:

  • Virat Kohli – 287 innings
  • Sachin Tendulkar – 350 innings
  • Kumar Sangakkara – 378 innings

Rohit Sharma’s New Records

Rohit Sharma also created history in the match by becoming the sixth cricketer to reach 9,000 ODI runs as an opener. Before him, this milestone was achieved by Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chris Gayle, Adam Gilchrist, and Sourav Ganguly. Rohit reached 9,000 runs in just 181 innings, breaking Tendulkar’s record of 197 innings.

Additionally, Rohit set another record by completing 11,000 ODI runs during this tournament. He achieved this in a match against Bangladesh, taking only 261 innings to do so. Virat Kohli remains the fastest to reach 11,000 runs, having achieved the milestone in just 222 innings.

Kohli Sets Another Record for India

Apart from his batting achievements, Kohli also set a new record for India in the field. During the match against Pakistan, he became the player with the most catches for India in ODIs. Before the match, he was tied with former captain Mohammad Azharuddin at 156 catches. However, Kohli took two catches in the game, moving ahead of Azharuddin to set a new record.
