While there is a rain warning for Mumbai and Konkan, a possibility of heavy rain in the next 24 hours for Thane and Raigad has also been issued.

On Sunday, the Southwest monsoon advanced over sections of Pune, Mumbai and the majority of Maharashtra’s geographic areas, demonstrating consistent and rapid progression since its commencement on 30th May. Maintaining its pattern of early onset this year, the monsoon arrival in Mumbai and Pune occurred two days earlier than the usual date of 11th June.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra have experienced widespread heavy rainfall in recent days. With the onset of the monsoon, a ‘red’ alert has been issued, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall (exceeding 204 mm in 24 hours) over coastal Karnataka, Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra until Monday. Heavy rainfall is anticipated to persist in these regions throughout the upcoming week. An ‘orange’ alert will remain in effect until Tuesday, signalling continued monsoon activity in the week ahead.

Sunday saw Pune (Shivajinagar) experiencing 117 mm of rainfall, marking it as the third highest rainfall recorded in June since 1969. Late on Saturday, thunder and heavy rainfall severely affected Pune and large sections of Mumbai, leading to flooding on many major roads and underpasses. According to IMD rainfall data, Pune’s Lohegaon and surrounding areas received 1398 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.

Pune (Shivajinagar) typically receives an average rainfall of 156.3 mm in June. However, due to Saturday’s heavy rainfall, the city has already exceeded this monthly average, accumulating a total of 209.1 mm as of 8:30 am on Sunday, notably before the onset of the monsoon. The wettest June day in Pune since 1969 occurred in 1991 when the city recorded 529.5 mm of rainfall, compared to its annual average of 763 mm.
