Apple’s iOS 18.2 Update Brings New Customization Options for Users

WhatsApp has rolled out a major update for iPhone users, allowing them to set the app as their default choice for calling and messaging. With the latest iOS 18.2 update, users can now automatically open WhatsApp instead of Apple’s built-in Phone and Messages apps when tapping on a contact’s phone number or message button.

WhatsApp as Default: How to Enable It

The feature was first reported by WABetaInfo and MacRumors. To activate it, users must:

  • Update WhatsApp to the latest version from the App Store.
  • Install the iOS 18.2 update on their iPhone.
  • Navigate to Settings > Apps > Default Apps and select WhatsApp as the preferred app for calls and messages.

Once enabled, any attempt to call or message a contact from the iPhone’s Contacts app will directly launch WhatsApp, bypassing Apple’s default apps.

Feature Now Available Worldwide

Initially expected to be exclusive to European Union users, the feature has now been made available globally.

Apple Expanding Default App Customization

In addition to messaging and calling, Apple is working on allowing users to select third-party apps as defaults for various functions. Upcoming updates will let users customize their default apps for:

Web browsing
Email
Password management
Translation
Call filtering
Payments (in select regions)

Furthermore, iPhone users in the European Union will have the option to change their default maps app, offering greater flexibility.

With this update, iPhone users now have more control over their communication preferences, enhancing the integration of WhatsApp into their daily routines.
