WhatsApp Warns of Zero-Click Hack Targeting Journalists and Activists

WhatsApp has issued a warning about a sophisticated zero-click hack that affected around 90 users in 24 countries. This attack, which doesn’t require victims to click on any suspicious links, used advanced spyware to compromise users’ devices.

How It Works

The hack involved a zero-click exploit, which means hackers could access the devices without the users doing anything. They didn’t need to interact with any harmful links or content. This type of attack is particularly dangerous because it can happen silently and undetected.

Who Was Affected?

The attack primarily targeted journalists and civil society members, including individuals in Europe. The spyware, developed by an Israeli company called Paragon Solutions, is sold to governments to fight crime and ensure security. However, it was used here for cyber espionage.

What Has Been Done?

Once WhatsApp detected the breach, it worked quickly to stop the attack. They are now working with Citizen Lab, a Canadian internet watchdog, to support those affected. WhatsApp also notified law enforcement about the breach.

This incident highlights the growing dangers of spyware and zero-click attacks, showing how easily devices can be hacked without the user’s knowledge.
