The 20th Mumbai Marathon, held on Sunday, witnessed 27 participants being hospitalized for various medical emergencies during the event. Out of the approximately 62,000 runners, around 2,018 required medical attention for issues such as muscle cramps, dehydration, and minor injuries. Among those hospitalized, one participant experienced heart complications and underwent an emergency angioplasty at Bombay Hospital.

The marathon, a popular annual event held on the third Sunday of January, attracted runners from Mumbai and beyond, including celebrities, youth, senior citizens, and athletes with disabilities. To ensure prompt medical care, the Asian Heart Institute deployed over 600 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and support staff. Of the runners treated, 55% suffered from cramps, dehydration, and minor injuries, while the 27 hospitalized cases included heart attacks, severe dehydration, fractures, and bleeding.

Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora, a cardiologist at the Asian Heart Institute, reported that 16 hospitalized individuals received treatment and were discharged, while the remaining patients are in stable condition. Two participants at Bombay Hospital suffered from severe dehydration, leading to falls and injuries. They are currently in the ICU on life support. A 48-year-old runner who experienced chest pain during the race underwent a successful angioplasty at the same hospital.

Other hospitals, including Lilavati, Poddar, Jaslok, GT, and Saifee, also treated marathon-related cases. Despite the medical incidents, the event showcased a well-coordinated emergency response system to address the health needs of participants.
