Mumbai Man Says Entire Office Sick as City’s AQI Worsens Again
Mumbai has been covered in haze for several days, with the city’s air quality slipping back to worrying levels and causing a spike in health problems among residents. Many people have been complaining of sore throat, fever and allergies, which they believe are linked to the rising pollution.
Arindam Paul, Chief Business Officer at Atomberg, said that almost everyone in his office has fallen ill due to the poor air quality. Responding to a viral video showing thick smog over the city, he expressed shock that Mumbai — a coastal city — is now recording such high pollution levels. He noted that the November–January period, once known for pleasant weather, has now become one of the worst for pollution.
On Tuesday, Mumbai recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 172, which falls under the “moderate” category. But six areas reported AQI levels above 200, placing them in the “poor” range. Thick haze also reduced visibility across several parts of the city.
Paul said rising cases of fever, throat irritation and allergies were being observed across workplaces. “Almost everyone in office is down with sore throat, fever or allergy… No coastal city should have a 250–300 AQI,” he posted on X. He added that rapid construction alone cannot explain the severe dip in air quality.
Many other residents have also taken to social media since early November, reporting breathing troubles, eye irritation and persistent cough. As the smog continues, citizens are urging authorities to take stronger, long-term steps to protect public health in Mumbai.
