Student had gone missing after solo trip to Lonavala; bag found near Tiger Point

A 20-year-old law student from Navi Mumbai, who had gone missing after travelling to Lonavala, was found dead on Sunday in a deep gorge near Tiger Point. The body was recovered from nearly 400 feet below the cliff.

The deceased has been identified as Shreya Narendra Pati, a resident of Navi Mumbai and a student of BITS Law School, Kalyan. According to police, Shreya had travelled alone to Lonavala on January 31. Initial investigation suggests that she reached the area by autorickshaw.

Her family told police that Shreya had informed them she was going for a trek near Duke’s Nose. When she did not return home by evening and could not be contacted, her family came to Lonavala and filed a missing person complaint at the Lonavala Rural Police Station on Sunday.

During the search operation, police received information about a bag found at Tiger Point, which is more than 10 kilometres away from Duke’s Nose. The bag was later confirmed to belong to Shreya. Following this, search teams from Shivdruga Mitra Trekkers, along with police, disaster response teams and drones, were deployed to locate her.

At around 5 pm, Shreya’s body was spotted deep inside the gorge with the help of a drone camera. The rescue team managed to retrieve the body at around 9 pm.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Gajanan Tonpe said preliminary investigation shows that Shreya reached Tiger Point alone in a rickshaw. The rickshaw driver has been identified and his statement will be recorded. Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading to her death.

Further investigation is underway.
