Three-day summit highlights Maharashtra’s clean energy push and the urgent need for climate-ready urban planning.

Mumbai hosted a major climate event on Monday as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Mumbai Climate Week at the Jio World Convention Centre on February 17.

The three-day programme, running until February 19, has brought together government officials, business leaders, environmental experts and citizens to discuss climate action for Mumbai, India and developing regions of the world.

State’s Green Energy Push

Speaking at the event, Fadnavis shared Maharashtra’s energy plans. He said that by 2030 the state could have around 84 gigawatts of power capacity, with more than half coming from clean and renewable sources.

At present, Maharashtra has about 48 gigawatts of installed power, and 21% of it already comes from renewable energy. This also contributes to India’s total renewable capacity of about 260 gigawatts.

Events Across the City

The main “Central Hub” of the week is being held at the Jio World Cultural Centre in Bandra-Kurla Complex, while several climate-related programmes are scheduled across Mumbai.
The initiative aims to encourage partnerships, innovation and discussions on sustainability and climate resilience.

Mumbai Climate Week is organised by Project Mumbai along with the Maharashtra government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Mumbai’s Climate Reality

Fadnavis said Mumbai is the right place for such a dialogue because the city regularly faces the impact of climate change.
He noted that heavy rainfall disrupts business and daily life, while heatwaves directly affect workers such as construction labourers, street vendors and farmers.

He added that for a coastal financial hub like Mumbai, climate action is not optional but essential. He also pointed out that global investors are increasingly supporting sustainable markets, and Maharashtra wants to remain ahead in attracting investment and innovation.

Ongoing Climate Measures

The Chief Minister said the state is expanding renewable energy in industrial zones, promoting electric vehicles in cities and investing in infrastructure designed to handle floods and climate risks. These steps aim to protect both communities and businesses.

Dignitaries Present

The event was attended by Environment Minister Pankaja Munde and Martin Krause from the United Nations Environment Programme.

Participants also watched a video message from Prince William, who founded The Earthshot Prize, a global programme launched in 2020 to support solutions to major environmental challenges.
