A terrible avalanche hit the ski slopes of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, leading to the sad death of one skier. Some foreigners got stuck too. They were skiing on the Kongdoori slopes, which they went to without knowing much about the area.

An avalanche happens when a lot of snow quickly moves down a mountain. This one happened because of heavy rain and snow recently. The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority had already warned people about the dangerous conditions.

Rescue teams are working hard. They’ve rescued seven skiers who are now getting medical help at a nearby hospital. The Army and a team from the Jammu and Kashmir administration are searching for anyone else who might be stuck.

Just the day before this happened, the disaster management authority warned about avalanches in all ten districts of the Union territory. Some places were said to have a low risk, like Anantnag and Kulgam. Others, like Bandipora and Baramulla, were at a medium risk for 24 hours.

They also said places above 2200 meters in Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Kupwara, and Ganderbal districts were at a high risk. People were told to be careful and stay away from areas where avalanches could happen.

This incident shows how dangerous it can be to go skiing in places where avalanches are likely, especially when the weather is bad.
