Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma Announces Political Entry for 2024 Lok Sabha Polls
Popular filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has surprised many by revealing his plan to step into politics before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Varma took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share his decision, announcing his intention to contest the upcoming elections in Andhra Pradesh, specifically from the Pithapuram constituency.
In a brief tweet, Varma stated, “Sudden decision. Am happy to inform that I am contesting from Pithapuram.” However, he didn’t provide further details about his political goals or how he plans to campaign.
Varma’s entry into politics comes at an interesting time, coinciding with the announcement of the Telugu Desam Party-Bharatiya Janata Party-Jana Sena Party (JSP) alliance’s candidate for the Pithapuram seat, Tollywood actor and JSP chief Pawan Kalyan.
This decision by Varma follows controversies surrounding his recent film, “Vyooham,” which explores the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh, especially focusing on the circumstances surrounding the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s death. The film stars actors Manasa Radhakrishnan, Ajmal Ameer, and Surabhi Prabhavathi.
Last year, Varma faced criticism and calls for his expulsion from the state by local leaders after releasing “Vyooham.” The film’s portrayal of sensitive political topics stirred controversy and angered certain political figures, including TDP leader Nara Chandrababu Naidu, TDP leader Nara Lokesh, and actor-politician Pawan Kalyan.
Varma had previously expressed his displeasure with these political figures, particularly targeting Naidu, Lokesh, and Kalyan for their alleged involvement in protests outside his office in Hyderabad regarding the screening of “Vyooham.”
