The project, envisioned in four phases, spans a total length of 12.20 km and carries an estimated cost of Rs 14,000 crores.

Date: July 14, 2024

A year after announcing the project in July 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the bhoomipujan for the third phase of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s ambitious Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR).

During his visit on July 13, the Prime Minister launched, dedicated and laid the foundation stone for multiple projects related to the road, railways, and ports sector worth more than Rs 29,400 crores at NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai.

The project, envisioned in four phases, spans a total length of 12.20 km and carries an estimated cost of Rs 14,000 crores.

It also includes twin tunnels, which will be constructed at the cost of Rs 6,300 crores.

This will be the second tunnel coming inside the SGNP; the other being the proposed twin-tube tunnel for the Borivali-Thane link road.

The GMLR project will connect the Western Express Highway (WEH) at Goregaon to the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund.

The officials said that work on the GMLR mega-project is expected to be completed in five years.

Here are other benefits of this project:

1.     GMLR Project is the fourth major east-west link planned for the Mumbai Suburbs. It will prove beneficial for traffic in North Mumbai.

2.     New connectivity will be established through GMLR which will decongest the traffic.

3.     Western Suburbs will get direct connectivity to the new airport at Navi Mumbai and Pune – Mumbai Expressway.

4.     GMLR will reduce the present travel time from 75 mins to about 25 mins

5.     Shorter travel distance by about 8.80 km compared to Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR).

6.     This connectivity will also prove beneficial to vehicles going to Nashik Highway.

7.     It will help in saving fuel consumption

8. This will also enhance the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Mumbai

9. The total length of the six-lane GMLR shall be around 13.25 km, and it will be 45.7 metres wide, with the 4.70 km-long twin-tunnel portion to be dug through TBMs.
