The Central government has approved the ₹4,081 crore Kedarnath ropeway project, which will greatly reduce travel time from Sonprayag to Kedarnath. Instead of the current 8-9 hour journey, the ropeway will take just 36 minutes.

This 12.9-kilometer-long ropeway is part of the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana and will be built under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. The project aims to make the journey much easier for pilgrims, who currently have to walk long distances to reach the holy shrine.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it a “major milestone” in improving the Char Dham pilgrimage experience. Once completed, the ropeway will provide safe and smooth access to Kedarnath, making travel more convenient for devotees.
