A store in Saudi Arabia’s Kuwait has sparked controversy recently after it shared a video on Instagram of a few ‘trendy sandals’ that are sold for a price of 4,500 riyals (about Rs 1 lakh).
The video was originally shared by Kuwait Inside — an Instagram page — that shares updates from in and around the Middle Eastern country.
The caption of the post read, “Trendy sandals sell for 4,500 riyals ($1,200) in Saudi Arabia.”
The video, however, went viral after it reached Indians because the sandals look almost exactly like the ones that most of the country uses at home daily.
Several netizens criticized the excessive price of the footwear, pointing out that they look like any other regular slippers usually worn to the bathroom in Indian households.
“So, we have been using 4500 riyal slippers for the toilet our whole life,” commented a user on Instagram. “In India, we wear these to the bathroom. We buy them for Rs 60,” said another.
A few even joked that it was the Indian mothers’ favourite weapon to discipline their kids.
One of the users commented on the post, “In India, Dads use this as a Toilet footwear & Moms use it as a weapon.” Another user wrote, “At this point, they are trying to sell anything to the rich.”
The video even sparked business ideas.
“Indians should take this opportunity to buy chappals here for 100 INR and sell them there for 4500 Riyal (1 lac INR), return on investment is 1000x,” said Arkabrata Das (@i_amArko).
