The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are crucial for India as they will determine whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies will win the election for a third time running, or whether the government at the centre will be formed by the coalition of political parties headed by the Indian National Congress, the biggest opposition party wherein more than two dozen parties have joined it to form the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A).

The elections are enveloped in a lot of fascinating turning points, one of which could become the Lok Sabha seat of Thrissur, Kerala. The BJP has never managed to win this constituency, but it seems that this time the votes are sliding in their favour. With BJP’s Suresh Gopi leading in the constituency, this could be a win that would start to set BJP’s roots in Kerala.

The coalition of opposition parties in INDIA is intensifying its battle for power, defying earlier exit poll forecasts. With a tight race unfolding, the NDA is currently ahead in 298 seats, while the INDIA bloc leads in 227 seats as of 2 pm. Congress is making strides with 97 seats, contrasting BJP’s lead in 238 seats with two confirmed victories, as per the latest data from the Election Commission’s website.

Noteworthy is the Congress’s resurgence in Rajasthan, where it seems poised to break its losing streak, currently ahead in eight out of 25 seats. Similarly, in Haryana, the Congress is eyeing a comeback, showing signs of progress after losing all seats to the BJP in 2019. Out of 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, the Congress maintains a consistent lead in six seats.

Despite exit polls favouring the BJP in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is bucking the trend of anti-incumbency, maintaining its stronghold and even making gains against the BJP.

The Samajwadi Party has experienced a significant turnaround, greatly surpassing its 2019 performance where it secured five seats. Presently, it leads in 37 seats, reflecting a remarkable improvement. With the Opposition, now consolidated as the INDIA bloc, aiming to challenge the NDA’s count, the stakes are elevated. Disregarding the exit poll forecasts, the Opposition remains steadfast in its trust in the “people’s polls”.
