Mumbai could soon witness the construction of a new tourist attraction with the proposed installation of a ropeway (cable car) linking Mulund to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), announced Mihir Kotecha, MLA from Mulund and BJP-Mahayuti candidate for the Mumbai North East constituency. Kotecha revealed that he has advocated for the project, and the government has initiated the process by requesting a report from the tourism department.

Documents shared by Kotecha during his campaign indicated that he had corresponded with the tourism ministry on December 11, 2023, regarding the proposal.

In April, the ministry followed up by soliciting a comprehensive report from the director of the tourism department to prepare the proposal. Kotecha’s commitment to the initiative forms part of his electoral pledge, and he remains optimistic about the realization of the ropeway post-elections.

In his correspondence with the tourism ministry, Kotecha highlighted the presence of the historic ‘Teen Murti Mandir’ atop a picturesque hill within SGNP, which serves as a green sanctuary amidst Mumbai’s urban landscape. SGNP spans approximately 87 square kilometres, with its eastern boundary bordering Kotecha’s Mulund constituency.

“The citizens of Mulund have expressed high hopes for our government, and thus, I am advocating for this project on their behalf,” Kotecha stated in his letter. He emphasized the importance of constructing a ropeway to facilitate convenient access for devotees to the temple, proposing further development of the area into a tourist destination with the addition of a viewing gallery.

The proposed ropeway project not only promises to enhance accessibility to the revered Teen Murti Mandir but also aims to leverage the natural beauty of SGNP to bolster tourism in the region. If realized, the project could significantly contribute to Mumbai’s tourism landscape, offering visitors a unique and scenic experience amidst the bustling metropolis.
