Mumbai has reached a significant milestone with the completion of its first cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road Station. This six-lane bridge, which also includes pedestrian walkways, is designed to improve traffic flow and modernize the city’s infrastructure. Construction began on February 14, 2022, and was completed in just two years.

The bridge supports smooth traffic under the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass while providing enough clearance for vehicles under the Eastern Freeway, meeting Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.

Key Features of the Reay Road Overbridge

  • Modern Design: Equipped with LED lighting, the bridge adds to Mumbai’s skyline while blending with its heritage surroundings.
  • Safety and Durability: A health monitoring system ensures the bridge remains safe and well-maintained over time.
  • Minimal Disruption: Built next to the old British-era bridge, the project avoided major traffic disruptions during construction.

Part of a Larger Upgrade

The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), in partnership with the BMC and Railways, is leading efforts to replace Mumbai’s century-old bridges. Similar projects are ongoing at Byculla, Dadar, and Ghatkopar, marking a citywide push to modernize transportation infrastructure.

The Reay Road Bridge is set to open soon, offering more than just utility—it represents Mumbai’s move toward a modern, efficient, and visually appealing urban future.
