NPCI Introduces Stricter FASTag Rules: 70-Minute Window to Avoid Payment Declines from Feb 17, 2025!
Maharashtra, India – February 2025: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is introducing new FASTag rules starting February 17, 2025. Under these rules, travelers will have only 70 minutes to fix issues like low balance or blacklisted accounts before their toll payment gets declined. This update aims to make toll payments smoother but may cause trouble for those who are unprepared.
What’s Changing in FASTag Validation?
FASTag transactions will now be checked based on when they are read by the scanner and the account status:
✅ If your FASTag is blacklisted or has low balance for more than 60 minutes before reaching a toll plaza, your payment will be declined.
✅ You will get 10 extra minutes after your tag is read at the toll to recharge. If you don’t, the transaction will fail with error code 176.
How Will This Affect Travelers?
These changes have both benefits and challenges:
Good News for FASTag Users:
🔹 No more double toll charges if you act fast – If you recharge within 10 minutes of the FASTag being read, you can get a refund of the penalty and pay only the regular toll.
🔹 Authorities like NPCI, IHMCL, and NHAI will be able to handle failed transactions more efficiently.
Challenges for Users:
⚠️ Last-minute recharges may not work anymore – If your FASTag has been flagged for low balance or blacklisting for over an hour, adding money at the last moment won’t help.
⚠️ Increased security checks – This update aims to prevent fraud by blocking inactive or suspicious accounts before they reach the toll.
How the New Rules Work in Different Situations
🔹 FASTag Blacklisted Before Toll: If your FASTag is blacklisted an hour before you reach the toll, your payment will be declined and you’ll have to pay double the toll fee.
🔹 Recharging on Time: If you recharge at least 60 minutes before or within 10 minutes after your FASTag is scanned, your transaction will go through, and you’ll pay the normal toll.
🔹 FASTag Blacklisted but Recharged Quickly: If your FASTag was blacklisted but you recharge within 10 minutes of it being read, you can claim a penalty refund and pay only the standard fee.
How to Avoid Issues
While the new rules might seem strict, they are meant to make toll payments more secure and efficient. To avoid penalties, make sure to:
✅ Keep enough balance in your FASTag before your journey.
✅ Check your FASTag status before heading out.
Since these changes take effect on February 17, 2025, travelers should stay updated and plan ahead to ensure a hassle-free experience at toll plazas.
