The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) proposed a 5.5 km tunnel from Gaimukh to Fountain Hotel junction.

Date: July 6, 2024

In a significant development, Thane is all set for another underground tunnel between Bhayander and Gaimukh aimed at easing traffic congestion on Ghodbunder road.  This is a part of the Rs 20,000 crore Gaimukh-Bhayander corridor project.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) proposed a 5.5 km tunnel from Gaimukh to Fountain Hotel junction. Additionally, there will be an elevated corridor from Fountain Hotel to Bhayander. Recently, the proposal was approved in a meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath.

After the approval of the project, MMRDA officials announced that the process to prepare the detailed project report and tender documents for the 15 km corridor will commence in a few weeks.

“We are going to ensure that there will be minimum displacement while executing this project. The tunnels have to be built because of the presence of the Metro elevated corridor as well as hillocks between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel junction,” an official said.

With this, the travel time between Bhayander and Thane will soon be reduced by nearly 30 minutes. Currently, it takes nearly an hour to commute between two cities.

It is pertinent to note that this is the second tunnel in this part of MMR. Currently, work on the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel via Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) has already begun.
