A United Airlines Boeing 777 airliner heading for Japan had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff on Thursday when a wheel broke off and crashed into an airport parking lot hitting a few parked cars.

A video shared online shows the wheel falling seconds after the United Airlines plane takes off at San Francisco International Airport.

The wheel bounced into a car park used by airport personnel, according to the local news broadcaster. Airport officials said several cars were damaged.

According to United Airlines, the plane heading for Osaka carried 249 passengers.

Boeing has had a number of quality control difficulties, most notably in January, when a door-sized piece on a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew off the fuselage after the jet took off in Portland, Oregon.

Nobody was seriously wounded in the event, which resulted in a 19-day emergency grounding of all Boeing 737 Max 9s.

Last week, US regulators instructed Boeing 90 days to develop a plan to solve quality control shortcomings, with the FAA director stating that the corporation must “commit to real and profound improvements.”
