People gathered in large numbers outside ATM after reports claimed the machine was giving nearly five times more money than requested

Vasai, 18th May 2026: A major technical glitch at an ATM in Vasai’s Golani Naka area created confusion and heavy crowds on Saturday night after the machine reportedly started dispensing much more cash than customers had requested.

According to local reports, the problem occurred at a Hitachi ATM where a customer who tried to withdraw ₹100 allegedly received ₹500. Similarly, another customer who requested ₹400 reportedly got ₹2,000 from the machine. However, customers claimed that only the original withdrawal amount was deducted from their bank accounts.

As word about the unusual ATM malfunction spread across the area, many people rushed to the spot hoping to withdraw extra cash. Within a short time, a large crowd gathered outside the ATM, creating chaos and curiosity among local residents.

Several customers were left shocked and confused after receiving more money than expected. Many were uncertain whether the issue was a technical error or a larger banking problem.

After receiving information about the incident, local police reached the spot and temporarily stopped all ATM transactions to avoid possible misuse or financial loss. Officers also cleared the crowd gathered outside the machine.

Bank authorities and the technical team were informed immediately, following which an inspection of the ATM was started. Officials said the ATM services will remain suspended until the issue is fully resolved.

Authorities believe the quick action by police and bank officials helped prevent a major financial problem. The exact reason behind the ATM glitch is still under investigation.

The incident has once again highlighted how technical failures in ATM systems can still create panic and confusion among people despite the growing use of digital banking and UPI payments.
