Resident Alleges Aggressive Behaviour by Recovery Agents Inside Housing Society

A viral video from Badlapur in Maharashtra has triggered a heated discussion online after a Mumbai resident alleged that loan recovery agents behaved aggressively when asked to show their identity and authorisation documents inside a residential society.

According to the resident, the incident took place when recovery agents, reportedly connected to a financial services company, entered the housing complex during a loan recovery visit. The man claimed he questioned the agents about their identity cards, permission and reason for entering the premises.

He later clarified on social media that the loan account was not related to him and that he was only helping a woman from the neighbourhood during the interaction.

The resident alleged that the argument escalated after he objected to the agents’ behaviour and their entry into the society without proper verification. A video of the confrontation soon surfaced online and quickly went viral.

The incident sparked strong reactions on social media, with many users saying recovery agents must carry valid identification and follow proper procedures while visiting residential areas.

Several people pointed out that, under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks and recovery agents are not allowed to threaten, harass or publicly humiliate borrowers during recovery processes.

Many users demanded strict action and urged authorities to investigate the matter. Some also called for complaints to be filed with the police and the RBI Ombudsman.

At the same time, a section of users defended recovery procedures, stating that borrowers should clear their EMIs on time to avoid such situations.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the conduct of loan recovery agents and the need for stricter monitoring and accountability in recovery operations.

As per RBI guidelines, recovery agents are expected to:

  • Carry valid identity cards
  • Show authorisation documents when asked
  • Avoid threats, abuse or intimidation
  • Maintain professional behaviour during visits
  • Refrain from creating public disturbances
