Mumbai To Get Futuristic Electric ‘Flying Boats’ For Faster Travel To Alibaug & Navi Mumbai Airport
Swedish company Candela brings premium electric hydrofoil boats to Mumbai with silent rides, luxury seating and eco-friendly technology.
Mumbai’s sea travel may soon become faster, quieter and more luxurious with the arrival of the Candela P-12 Business, the world’s first electric hydrofoil passenger boat developed by Swedish company Candela. The advanced electric vessel is expected to operate on routes connecting Gateway of India with Alibaug, Elephanta and the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport under Indian operator JalVimana.
Unlike regular ferries and speedboats, the Candela P-12 uses special hydrofoil technology with underwater wings that lift the boat above the water while moving. This allows the vessel to glide smoothly over waves, reducing vibrations, noise and travel fatigue for passengers.
The electric boat has been designed like a premium business-class cabin and includes comfortable seating, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, USB-C charging ports, panoramic windows and even a coffee bar. The vessel can carry between 16 and 20 passengers and also offers wheelchair and stroller-friendly boarding through a stabilised adjustable ramp.
According to Candela, the P-12 cruises at 25 knots and offers a range of around 40 nautical miles on a single charge. The company claims the electric hydrofoil uses nearly 80 per cent less energy compared to conventional diesel-powered ferries while also creating minimal wake and lower underwater noise, helping reduce environmental damage and protect marine ecosystems.
