MSRDC says heavy monsoon rain caused minor damage; repairs completed immediately.

Mumbai, July 4, 2026: Potholes have appeared on the cable-stayed bridge of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s newly opened Missing Link project, less than two months after it was inaugurated.

Videos of the potholes were widely shared on social media, with many commuters raising concerns about the quality of the new road. The potholes were seen near the expansion joint at the start of the cable-stayed bridge.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) said the damage was minor and caused by heavy monsoon rain in the ghat section. Officials said repair work was started immediately by the contractor and MSRDC engineers, and the potholes were fixed within minutes. The agency also clarified that there is no structural damage to the bridge.

Even though the repairs were completed quickly, the incident has raised questions about the durability of the newly built project. Many commuters and experts have called for regular inspections during the monsoon to ensure the road remains safe.

The 13.3-km Missing Link project was inaugurated on May 1, 2026. It helps reduce the Mumbai–Pune travel distance by about 6 km and cuts travel time by 25 to 30 minutes. The project also features India’s tallest cable-stayed bridge and twin tunnels, making it one of Maharashtra’s biggest road infrastructure projects.
