Proposed high-speed rail corridor could bring Maharashtra’s two biggest cities closer than ever, with trains running at speeds of up to 350 kmph.

Pune: Travelling between Pune and Mumbai could one day take just 48 minutes if the proposed Mumbai-Pune bullet train project becomes a reality. The journey, which currently takes around three to four hours by road or regular train, could be completed in less than an hour.

The proposed high-speed rail corridor is part of India’s long-term railway expansion plan and is expected to allow trains to run at speeds of up to 350 kmph.

The Mumbai-Pune route is one of the country’s busiest travel corridors, used daily by office-goers, students, business executives, tourists and airport passengers. The bullet train could make same-day return trips between the two cities quick and convenient.

Experts believe the project could boost business, tourism and investments in Pune by improving connectivity with Mumbai, India’s financial capital. It could also make travelling to Mumbai’s international airport much easier for Pune residents.

The Mumbai-Pune corridor is among seven proposed bullet train routes across India. Other planned corridors include Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri.

However, no official construction timeline has been announced yet. If approved and completed, the Mumbai-Pune bullet train could become one of Maharashtra’s most transformative infrastructure projects.
