While most tourists steer clear of monsoon travels out of concern, one city in India stays surprisingly unaffected, and even becomes more welcoming for budget. Known for its lakes and palaces, Udaipur becomes a practical and peaceful destination during the rainy season. You might wonder how, that’s because of fewer crowds, open access to popular spots, and an overall slower pace that makes moving around easier.

First, let’s look at the basics. In Udaipur, the monsoon season runs from July to September. Temperatures often fall between 25°C and 35°C, and there is an increase in humidity during this period, yet it is still more tolerable than during the dry summer. The city experiences moderate amounts of rain, which are brief downpours that typically don’t interfere with your activities for very long. The weather remains cool enough to walk around, and the rain brings some much-needed relief from heat.

Must-Visit Spots That Don’t Cost a Lot

If you’re now thinking of a short trip to Udaipur, know that three to four days are enough to explore the main sights. Start with Lake Pichola, where you can take a boat ride and see the City Palace and Jag Mandir from the water.

One important stop is Sajjangarh Palace, also called the Monsoon Palace. Built on a hilltop, it was originally meant for stargazing and later became a place to spend the monsoon months. It offers a clear view of the city and the nearby lakes.

Seasonal Events and Festivals

Since some of the festivities also happen during the monsoon, it’s a good opportunity to learn about the native way of life. Every August the natives celebrate the Teej Festival with folk music and dances. In the evening, take a stroll around the lakes, and you can see the Dharohar Folk Dance Show. You can also try a small painting workshop if you’re an art lover. You can also do regular things, like taste some street food and explore local markets. Additionally, Mewar Utsav is held following the end of the monsoon. It’s a big celebration that showcases Udaipur culture through parades, dance, and music.

Now, if you intend to travel during this time of year, booking accommodations in advance is a smart idea, particularly if you want a hotel with a view of the lake. Additionally, before leaving the house, check the local weather forecast and carry your own rain essentials. There are public transports available, but for short-distance travel, renting a car could be more practical.
