20-year-old woman with hearing and speech disabilities found pregnant; forensic report reveals father as biological parent, police probe ongoing

Mumbai has been shaken by a shocking and disturbing incident from the upscale Cuffe Parade area, where a 20-year-old woman with hearing and speech disabilities was sexually abused over several months. DNA tests have now confirmed that her own father is the biological father of her unborn child, leading to his arrest.

The case came to light in September 2025 when the young woman complained of severe discomfort to her grandmother. As she cannot speak, she used hand gestures to explain that she felt something unusual in her stomach. Worried about her health, the family took her to Cama & Albless Hospital for a medical check-up.

Doctors at the hospital discovered that the woman was nearly five months pregnant. Considering the seriousness of the situation, hospital authorities immediately informed the police, who then began an investigation.

Initially, the investigation faced difficulties due to communication barriers. The woman was unable to give a statement and was hesitant to speak about the incident. Police questioned her father, but he denied any wrongdoing and could not explain how his daughter became pregnant. He also refused to file a complaint, which raised suspicion.

After receiving counselling and support, the woman later agreed to register a formal complaint. Based on her gestures and assisted communication, police arrested two people — an adult man and a 17-year-old boy — whom she identified as having assaulted her. Police also said they were checking whether more people were involved.

To identify the person responsible for the pregnancy, police collected DNA samples from 17 suspects, including the woman’s father. These samples were compared with the foetus’s DNA.

The forensic report, received on January 27, confirmed that the woman’s father was the biological parent of the unborn child. He was immediately taken into custody.

Police believe the sexual abuse took place over several months, between March and September last year. A formal case was registered on September 22, shortly after the pregnancy was discovered.

Authorities have described the crime as extremely cruel, pointing out the victim’s vulnerability and the serious breach of trust. The investigation is still ongoing, and police say they will continue to examine the role of all individuals connected to the case.
