Pune, June 11, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that the city will receive water supply on alternate days starting Monday, June 15, 2026, as a precautionary measure to ensure efficient water management amid concerns over below-normal monsoon rainfall this year.
The decision follows a review of the available water stock in the reservoirs supplying water to Pune, including the Khadakwasla dam chain, Bhama Askhed Dam and Pavana Dam. According to PMC officials, the move aims to safeguard drinking water availability for residents in the coming months.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), in its revised long-range forecast released on May 29, 2026, predicted a higher likelihood of below-normal rainfall during the June-September southwest monsoon season. The forecast indicates a 24 percent probability of seasonal rainfall being between 90 and 95 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA), while the probability of receiving less than 90 percent of normal rainfall stands at 60 percent. The IMD has also warned that El Niño conditions could adversely affect rainfall distribution across the country.
At present, only 5.03 TMC of water remains in the Khadakwasla dam system, of which approximately 3.0 TMC is available for Pune city. PMC stated that although the city currently has sufficient water compared to previous years, the possibility of reduced rainfall has prompted authorities to adopt a planned and cautious approach toward water resource management.
Officials said that implementing alternate-day water supply will help conserve available water and ensure a regular and adequate supply of drinking water to all residents during the monsoon period and beyond if required.
Residents facing water supply-related issues during the water-cut period can contact the PMC Care Call Centre at 1800-1030-222, send complaints via WhatsApp on 9689900002, or use the PMC Care App. For urgent complaints, citizens may also contact the concerned engineering officials as per the schedule issued by the civic body.
PMC has further stated that any changes in the water supply schedule due to emergency or operational requirements will be announced through its official website.
