Demand drops sharply at APMC market following deaths of Mumbai family; traders face losses

Watermelon prices in Navi Mumbai have dropped significantly after a food poisoning scare linked to the death of four members of a Mumbai family. Traders at the APMC market said panic among buyers has led to a sudden fall in demand during the peak summer season.

Wholesale prices of watermelon have fallen to as low as ₹5 to ₹7 per kg, compared to the usual ₹10 to ₹35 per kg. Retail prices, which generally range between ₹30 and ₹100 per kg, have also declined as consumers remain cautious.

The concern began after a family of four from Mumbai’s Pydhonie area died following a suspected case of food poisoning. The victims have been identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zaineb (13).

According to police, the family had consumed food items, including chicken pulao and watermelon, at home during a family gathering. Soon after, they reportedly suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhoea. All four later died.

Police and forensic teams have collected samples of various food items and water from the house, including watermelon, chicken dishes, rice, spices, dates, and drinking water. These samples have been sent for laboratory testing.

Initial post-mortem reports suggest food poisoning as the likely cause of death. However, officials are also looking into other possible factors. Statements of five guests who attended the gathering have been recorded, and none of them reported any illness despite eating the same food.

Authorities are now waiting for detailed forensic and food analysis reports to confirm the exact cause of the incident.
