New expressway stretch to cut distance, reduce travel time, and improve safety for commuters

Travel between Mumbai and Pune will soon become quicker and more convenient with the opening of the long-awaited Missing Link on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway from May 1. The new 13.3-km stretch is expected to shorten the route by around 6 km and save nearly 20 to 30 minutes of travel time.

In the first phase, only light motor vehicles such as cars and passenger buses will be allowed on the new route. Heavy goods vehicles will not be permitted for the next few months. Authorities will monitor traffic flow and safety before taking a decision on allowing more vehicle types.

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including flammable or explosive goods, will not be allowed on this stretch at all due to safety reasons.

To ensure smooth and safe travel, speed limits have been set. Cars can travel at a maximum speed of 100 kmph, while buses and other passenger vehicles can go up to 80 kmph. Strict action will be taken against those who break these rules, especially inside tunnels.

The project will be opened in phases. From May to around October, only cars and buses will use the route. Based on the initial review, authorities may later allow goods vehicles.

The Missing Link avoids the risky ghat section, making the journey safer as well as faster. It includes long tunnels and a cable-stayed bridge, helping reduce congestion and improve traffic movement.

Officials say the new stretch will ease pressure on the existing highway, lower accident risks, and provide a better travel experience. Once fully operational, it is expected to make the Mumbai–Pune journey more efficient and predictable, especially during peak hours and weekends.
