11 people accidentally fall into open excavation at under-construction SRA site; safety lapses under scrutiny

A late-night incident in Mumbai’s Bhandup (West) area turned tragic after a group of people accidentally fell into an open excavation pit at an under-construction Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) site near Metro Mall.

The incident took place near Janata Market, close to Matoshri Marriage Hall, where a total of 11 individuals reportedly plunged into the uncovered pit. Confusion remains over the exact timing, as the Mumbai Fire Brigade received emergency calls between 10:23 pm and 11:29 pm on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Emergency teams, including the fire brigade, police, and ambulance services, rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations. Officials confirmed that response and follow-up actions were still ongoing by Friday morning.

Among the injured, 25-year-old Bhalchandra Falle lost his life after being taken to hospital. Two others are currently undergoing treatment and are reported to be in stable condition, while the remaining victims have been discharged after receiving medical care.

Hospital reports indicate that one patient remains admitted at Criticare Hospital, while another is under treatment at Agarwal Hospital. Several others who were taken to Fortis Hospital and other facilities have since been discharged.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over safety measures and proper barricading at construction sites, especially in crowded residential areas. Authorities are expected to investigate how the group gained access to the hazardous spot and whether safety protocols were followed.
