Four-Day Operation Under Heavy Police Security; Cleared Land to Be Used for Bandra Terminus Expansion and New Train Services
Mumbai, May 19, 2026: The Western Railway on Tuesday launched a major demolition drive at Garib Nagar near Bandra railway station, removing nearly 400 illegal hutments following court orders.
The operation is being carried out with tight security by the Mumbai Police and Railway Police and is expected to continue for the next four days.
According to railway officials, around 100 eligible residents identified during a survey conducted in August 2021 have already been rehabilitated, and their rights have been protected as part of the redevelopment plan.
Authorities said the cleared land will be used for the expansion of Bandra Terminus. The project is expected to help start 50 new originating trains from Mumbai in the future.
The redevelopment plan also includes connecting the suburban railway station with the terminus and creating separate railway corridors for suburban train traffic.
Following the Hon’ble Bombay High Court’s directions, Western Railway has commenced the removal of illegal encroachments from Railway land near Bandra station.

Railway officials said the expansion project is aimed at reducing congestion around the station area and improving commuter movement and accessibility.
During the demolition drive, some local residents protested and tried to stop the operation. However, police officials present at the site quickly controlled the situation, allowing the drive to continue without any major disruption.
