Online argument between students escalates into campus controversy, draws political attention

A disagreement over a social media post has led to a controversy at Thakur College of Science and Commerce in Mumbai, once again highlighting the sensitivity of language-related issues.

The incident began when a Marathi-speaking student posted an Instagram story supporting the state’s directive on the use of Marathi by auto-rickshaw drivers. The post reportedly triggered a strong reaction from a non-Marathi student, who allegedly responded with abusive remarks.

What started as an online exchange soon escalated into a larger issue on campus, with students taking sides and tensions increasing.

The situation took a more serious turn after alleged comments were made about MNS chief Raj Thackeray, giving the dispute a political angle. The issue quickly grew beyond a personal disagreement, touching on matters of identity, language pride and student sentiments.

As the matter intensified, members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) intervened. Representatives, including Sonali Patil, Abhilash Gurav and Vinod Ghadigaonkar, visited the college and spoke to the students involved in the presence of college authorities.

During the interaction, emphasis was placed on maintaining discipline and respectful communication. Students were questioned about their remarks, especially those considered offensive.

Following the intervention, the students involved apologised for their comments. MNVS members also warned against any abusive behaviour or harassment based on language.

The college is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Meanwhile, a video related to the incident continues to circulate online, drawing attention to ongoing sensitivities around language and identity in educational institutions.
